HR & Operations Associate (Part-Time, Remote)

Location: Fully Remote, Los Angeles preferred
First & Third is a fully remote digital agency operating across multiple U.S. states. We are seeking an experienced, highly analytical, and detail-oriented professional interested in continuing to grow and developer their career in Human Resources and Operations.
This important role provides structured exposure to multi-state HR compliance, remote workforce operations, contractor administration, and internal systems support. The HR & Operations Associate will work directly under and be mentored by the Director of People & Operations, gaining practical experience in compliance tracking, documentation, and operational execution.
This role is ideal for someone who is intellectually curious, highly organized, and eager to build a foundation in People & Operations within a distributed organization.
Core Responsibilities
HR Administration & Compliance Support
- Assist with multi-state compliance tracking and documentation
- Assist in maintaining organized and confidential employee records
- Supporting employment documentation efforts
- Assist with onboarding coordination and checklist tracking
- Help track state-specific employment law requirements and keep management informed
- Support policy and handbook documentation updates
Operations & Process Support
- Maintain internal tracking spreadsheets and dashboards
- Assist with contractor documentation and agreement tracking
- Support payroll and benefits administrative coordination (non-decision-making)
- Receiving, scanning, organizing, and maintaining document libraries
- Assist with process documentation and SOP development
Research & Analytical Support
- Conduct research on employment law updates (as directed)
- Support development of compliance trackers and operational tools
- Identify process improvement opportunities
- Assist in building documentation frameworks for scalability
Ideal Candidate Profile
- College degree from accredited institution (Business, HR, Operations, Economics, or related field preferred)
- 3-5 years of HR experience working within a multi-state organization
- Familiarity with Gusto HR/Payroll is required
- Strong analytical and structured thinking ability
- Exceptional attention to detail
- High degree of discretion and professionalism
- Strong written communication skills
- Knowledge of time-tracking programs such as Harvest
- Self-motivated self-starter and comfortable working in a remote environment
- Eager to learn and open to feedback
- Must be able to take and pass a background check
- Preferred to be in Los Angeles County
Time Commitment & Compensation
- Approximately 10–20 hours per month
